IT was quite a moment for Swansea poet Peter Thabit Jones and thisisdylanthomas.co.uk when we stepped into the Alexandra Studios in Swansea.
For this was where Dylan Thomas’s play for voices – Under Milk Wood – was first recorded.
And we were there to do the same, or at least a much shorter version – 30 seconds to be precise, as the audio introduction to this website
.Regardless of its length, it was fantastic to hear Dylan Thomas’s words filling such a
historic space once more, more than half a century after the original was first spoken there.
You can listen to the clip here and watch an interview with Peter who kindly agreed to read the text for us.
Peter was born in Swansea in 1951, and was just two when Under Milk Wood was recorded. His own work has been widely published and broadcast and his talent has taken him all over the country and the world.
A collection of his poems, The Lizard Catchers, was nominated for the long list for the 2007 Welsh Book of the Year.
He is a big fan of Dylan Thomas and toured America with the poet’s daughter Aeronwy Thomas to take part in poetry readings and workshops. He and Aeronwy have also been involved in the creation of a downloadable walking tour highlighting buildings and landmarks in New York City connected with Dylan Thomas.
The clip was recorded by Paul Hazel of the School of Digital Media at Swansea Metropolitan University, with the permission of the Dylan Thomas Estate.
